Surrey County Council to leave Kingston in 2020 after 50 years

Surrey County Council is due to leave Kingston after 50 years of being in the County Hall building.

Council leader Tim Oliver announced last week that it would be moving to Midas House in Woking by mid-2020.

Surrey County Council has been sat outside of the borders of Surrey for nearly 50 years after boundary changes in 1964 that left them situated in the London borough of Kingston.

“Moving into the heart of the county and closer to our residents is a key step to delivering improved services and a county council we can all be proud of,’ Oliver said.

Leader of Woking Borough Council David Bittleston said: “The move will be a major boost for Woking, bringing further new and exciting economic opportunities, jobs and making the town busier and more vibrant.”

The move is predicted to save anywhere from £700,000 and £1.1 million due to savings in maintenance costs on the Victorian County Hall, said Oliver.

“Aside from the fact that the new civic heart will now actually be inside the county of Surrey, which has been our long-held ambition, the real driver has been the desire to place services right at the heart of the population we are here to serve,” he said.

Kingston Council remains part of Greater London in the Guildhall in Kingston Upon Thames.
