Kingston parkrun cancelled after Storm Eunice destruction

Kingston parkrun was cancelled on Saturday due to safety concerns following Storm Eunice and high speed winds.

Winds of up to 70 miles per hour battered Kingston on Friday, bringing down large trees and causing extreme travel disruptions.

Whilst weather conditions calmed down on Saturday, winds were still at high speeds of around 40 miles per hour.

Kingston parkrun, which is a timed five kilometre run, was originally planned to begin on Saturday at 9am at the YMCA Hawker centre.

The parkrun Event Director said: “It is with much sadness that we have had to admit that Storm Eunice has beaten us.

“Saturday February 19 will sadly be cancelled. Hope to see you all again the following week.

“Can I thank all the high viz heros that were waiting in the wings to help us.”

Another post showed fallen trees blocking the running route.

Kingston parkrun will take place again next Saturday subject to conditions.

In addition to parkrun cancellations, Richmond Park and Bushy Park were closed due to the storm and concerns over safety, with Richmond Park still closed.

On the Royal Parks website an update read: “Richmond Park will remain closed until Sunday February 20 due to the amount of damage caused by the storm and the number of trees down in the park requiring attention.

“We hope to be able to re-open the park on Sunday morning.”
