Up to 10 staff members and students at Kingston University tested positive this week for the coronavirus and are self-isolating, the University said in a newsletter last week.
At least one block at Seething Wells halls of residence, near Surbiton, is on lockdown after an unknown number of positive cases there.
The newsletter said: “The University has been liaising with those concerned to ensure that they are signposted to relevant support and they have everything needed to recuperate as quickly as possible.”
Several social distancing measures were implemented across the campus in preparation for the return of students this semester.
On campus, mask wearing is mandatory, there is routine cleaning and students are encouraged to use the NHS Test and Trace app to help with contact tracing.
Taught courses switched to a blended learning environment, with classes split online and in person.
Twenty-seven new cases were reported in Kingston upon Thames on October 8, according to data from NHS and Public Health England.
Richmond had 45 new cases on the same day.
The University said it is aware that staff and students may be anxious about the number of cases rising nationally and in the region.
“We continue to closely monitor the infection rates and are in constant contact with the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames and Public Health England’s London Coronavirus Response Cell,” said the newsletter.
More than 1,000 students tested positive for the virus at Newcastle University this week, including 12 members of staff.
Latest figures show 544 staff and students at Manchester Metropolitan University, had tested positive in total between September 14 and September 27.
The University of Nottingham confirmed that 1,510 students and 20 members of staff tested positive for the virus and are now self-isolating.
