Flat jockey championship going down to the wire

Oisin Murphy and William Buick head to Ascot tomorrow for QIPCO British Champions Day with the flat jockey championship still in the balance.

Champion jockey Murphy has had 151 wins this season leading arch rival Buick with 149 wins this season by two.

The two jockeys have been battling for top spot all season and the championship will be decided on the final day. Both jockeys have good rides on Champions Day and they both have strong claims of being crowned Champion Jockey for 2021.

Murphy said: “I’m looking forward to Saturday. I have some good rides Dragon Symbol, Alcohol Free, Sir Busker they all have chances.

“I won’t throw in the towel I’ve been in this position before and I know what it’s like, I can deal with it.”

Murphy will be hoping to hold on to his lead and retain his title. However, Buick has had a strong week, reducing the deficit from 11 before last Friday’s racing at Newmarket to two following last night’s racing at Chelmsford.

The bookmakers are still siding with Murphy because he is leading the championship. He is the 4/7 favourite to become the three-time defending champion despite being as short as 1/6 in the betting at the start of the week. Buick is now as short as 11/10 to take the title after being backed in from 5/2 at the start of the week.
