Kingston pubs and bars have thrown their support behind a council plan to curb excessive open air drinking in town.
The council wants to introduce restrictions which would allow police to stop someone from drinking, take their alcohol away, and even give them the power to fine or prosecute those who cause trouble.
Phil Nordak, manager of The Kings Tun Wetherspoon in Clarence Street, is in favour of the planned restrictions. He said restrictions should help cut down on anti-social behaviour and he does not believe it will harm his business.
Other pub managers within the restricted area were similiarly positive to the proposal, saying that it will be no problem for their businesses as long as the police target the right people.
Neville Rainford, Kingston’s Neighbourhood Manager, said: “I don’t have an analysis of business responses yet but, anecdotally, during this process, I am aware of general support for bringing in the order.”
The proposed restricted area would cover the riverside between South Lane and Lower Ham Road and the main town centre as far west in part to Queen Elizabeth Road.
The next stage for the council’s plan is a meeting on November 13. If approved, restrictions could be in place by spring next year.
