A first half strike by Ben Chilwell saw Chelsea defeat Brentford 1-0 at the Brentford Community Stadium on Saturday evening.
The full-back drilled the ball into the top corner from the edge of the area to score the only goal of the match just before half time.
Striker Bryan Mbeumo held Brentford’s best opportunities in the match, hitting the post in both halves of the game.
This was the first league meeting between the two sides in 74 years.
“It was very tough,” England international Chilwell told Sky Sports. “The last 20 minutes we showed the mentality we need to show all season.
“In the last 20 minutes to half an hour they (Brentford’s fans) were really pushing them on and it was hell on earth.”
A succession of saves from Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy ensured Chelsea withstood late pressure from the home side, who amassed 12 shots in the final 10 minutes of the match.
Brentford manager Thomas Frank said: “It is difficult to believe we dominated Chelsea, particularly in the last 30 minutes, and they are very lucky.
“I can’t ask for more; if we play this game 10 times, we win nine.”
The results mean Chelsea stays in 1st position of the Premier League with 19 points, whilst Brentford move to 7th place.
Brentford play Leicester next in the Premier League, whilst Chelsea host Swedish side Malmo in the Champions League on Wednesday.
