Olivier Award-winning writer pens Rose Theatre’s festive production

Chris Bush leads the production team in this year’s Rose Theatre Christmas play.

Kingston’s Rose Theatre has released first look photographs of their rehearsals for their new play based on a British folklore classic called Robin Hood & The Christmas Heist for the Christmas period, starting on the 30th November.

The play’s production team hosts an award-winning line up with writer Chris Bush, Pitch Perfect prize-winning composer Matt Winkworth and director Elin Schofield, among the talented cast and crew.

Writer Chris Bush – who won an Olivier for his musical Standing on the Sky’s Edge – said: “I’m thrilled to bring a fresh twist on this iconic figure to the Rose this Christmas, for a night full of daring do, festive cheer and collective endeavour.”

Bush added: “Robin Hood is the most enduring and appealing figure from all British folklore. At times like this, when the days are short, the nights are cold, […] we need figures like Robin to see us through the winter.”

The play centres around the classic folklore of Robin Hood, sticking to the traditional story of the legendary outlaw and the cruel Sheriff of Nottingham, but with a festive twist for the Christmas period.

Christopher Haydon, Artistic Director for Rose Theatre, said: “As we gear up to open this year’s production, we are thrilled to be bringing a new story of Robin Hood to life during the festive season.”

The production also marks the 10th anniversary of collaboration with the Rose Youth Theatre, who will be featured in the play again this year, alongside the main cast.

Haydon added that the play will bring “professional performers together with our vibrant young company, which is exciting as we celebrate 10 years of our approach of making Christmas stories fresh and fun”.
