Kingston Library to reopen after ceiling collapse

Kingston Library is expected to reopen next week following the collapse of a part of the building’s ceiling.

The library has been closed since Tuesday morning due to “unforeseen but necessary building maintenance”.

In an X post, the Council announced that the library was closed due to a small part of the ceiling plaster falling in, and repairs have now been completed.

The Council added: “A further survey will be undertaken as a precaution to ensure this type of incident does not reoccur and that the building is safe for staff and residents to visit.”

The library will remain closed for the rest of the week but is expected to reopen on Monday morning if it is found to be safe.

Councillor Olly Wehring said: “We’re not sure if this was due to Storm Bert at the weekend, nor are we sure if there’s something more fundamentally wrong with the ceiling.”

He told the Kingston Courier that investigations into the severity and cause of the damage have been conducted by the contractor Mitie.

This follows nearby Surbiton Library closing after two areas of its ceiling also collapsed in February 2022.
