This November, classical musicians will perform at the Wimbledon International Music Festival, now in its tenth year.
The festival (WIFM) is a 16-day celebration of classical music performed in various venues across Wimbledon including Wimbledon College and St John’s Church.
Speaking about this year’s theme ‘Looking Forward – Looking Back’, Anthony Wilkinson, the festival director of WIFM said: “To have many outstanding musicians to celebrate our tenth anniversary with programmes that feature music, was like a lance into the future, or admiration to the past.”
Performers at this year’s event include the Takács String Quartet, Grand Union Orchestra, harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani and opera star Sir Willard White.
Classical fans received a taste of what’s to come at PlayFest on Saturday, November 3 – a special programme of concerts that showcased an array of community talent.
Local and emerging musicians performed throughout the day at the St John’s Church, in conjunction with the WIFM festival and funded by Arts Council England.
Part of the WIMF’s mission is to bring “the finest artists to audiences in Wimbledon and South west London”, as well as provide a platform to “exceptional artists in the early stages of their careers”.
The timing of the festival coincides with St Cecilia’s Day on November 22, which organisers say honours the Patron Saint of Music by arranging these special events and involving the community.
The festival starts November 10 and finishes November 25. Tickets are available online.
