Hundreds gathered at Hollyfield School in Surbiton for Holi, the festival of colour
The Hindu festival is celebrated to welcome spring and it symbolises the triumph of good over evil.
The event brought together families, young people and residents, transforming an ordinary public space into a vibrant display of community and culture.
For many attendees, the celebration is more than just tradition. It’s also about staying connected to their roots while building a sense of belonging in the UK.
Yogan Yoganathan, a festival attendee, said celebrating Holi here is about keeping his culture alive.
“It’s important, especially for the next generation, to understand where they come from,” he said.
Local councillor Sue Ansari said events like this play an important role in bringing people together.
“It’s great to have festivals like Holi here in Kingston, and it celebrates diversity and helps different communities come together,” she said.
The festival does not only reflect its traditional meaning, but also the evolving identity of communities celebrating it far from home.
