Surbiton Hockey Club’s Hollie Webb collected the Women’s Team of the Year award at a memorable awards night for Team GB last Tuesday.
The Association of National Olympic Committees awards night, held in Doha, Qatar, paid tribute to GB’s female hockey team for their battling performances which saw them clinch the gold medal after a penalty shootout with defending champions the Netherlands.
Webb, who scored the winning penalty, was on hand to collect the award on behalf of the team and said: “It has been an unbelievable year for us, returning home from Rio as Olympic champions and the first ever GB women’s hockey team to win Olympic gold was an amazing feeling and an achievement we are all incredibly proud of.”
Team GB’s night then got better as they were named ‘Most Successful National Committee’ of the year following their haul of 67 medals in Rio, making it their best ever games.
Two other Surbiton Hockey Club players, Georgie Twigg and Giselle Ansley, were also in the gold medal winning team and Surbiton Ladies assistant coach Niall Mutch says their success has had an incredible impact on the club.
He said: “The atmosphere around the club is fantastic at the moment; we are certainly feeling the enthusiasm and excitement from our medalists’ success.
“The thriving colts section and the increase in the number of supporters coming to watch our games is terrific.”
Surbiton’s next home game will be on November 26th and they will be looking to beat Holcombe Ladies and stay at the top spot of the Investec Premier Division.
