Kingston athletes come together at award ceremony

Kingston athletes took a moment out from the third annual Sports Award Ceremony to urge others to make use of the borough’s sporting facilities.<--break->“>

The 2011 Sports Awards, organised by the Active Kingston group, were held to recognise the achievements of youth and senior athletes from the borough, ranging from Archery to Skiing, and everything in between.

Liz Foster, events coordinator for Active Kingston said: “The ceremony brings together those who have achieved the most.”

“It’s a celebration for the younger people, who sometimes feel left out.”

Before the awards were distributed, a number of sporting demonstrations were held in the hall, including a section for tennis.

Anthony Carter, 23, feared he would not play sport again after an accident left him in a wheelchair.

After attending a paraolympic talent day, Carter rediscovered his confidence and believes that playing tennis in Kingston has benefited him in more ways than one.

“Playing tennis has helped me meet new people and allowed me to keep up with my day to day fitness”, he said.

“It shows that I can still get out there.”

Jasmine Asghar, 14, who has represented Great Britain and played across Europe, added:

“I express myself through tennis. It’s fun and I get to meet new people.”

She went on to encourage others to “give it a go,” adding that the facilities across Kingston were brilliant.

The ceremony itself rewarded those as young as Asghar, to the more senior figures in Kingston such as Les Rowlandson, a man in his 90s who collected the Mayor’s Trophy for his hard work over the last few decades at Minima Yacht Club.

The Mayor praised the athletes by saying: “The very best of Kingston is on display tonight.”

2012 looks to be a busy year for Kingston sports, with more events being held by Active Kingston. Details of sports clubs and opportunities within the borough can be found at <a href=http://www.kingston.gov.uk/sports
