The politician joins a choir of young carers on a new single, whose success could make Davey the first MP to top the Christmas charts.
Sir Ed Davey, MP for Kingston and Surbiton and leader of the Liberal Democrats, has teamed up with Bath Philarmonia’s Young Carers’ Choir on the Christmas single Love is Enough.
The song, written by six young carers, hopes to raise money and awareness for a cause close to the politician’s heart.
Davey has spoken about his own experiences as a young carer. At the age of nine, Davey’s mother was diagnosed with cancer, and he acted as her carer until she passed away five years later.
Davey said: “I hope people listen to the song and download it, and are as impressed as I am by the amazing talent of these young carers.”
However, Davey’s vocals feature only briefly on the track. He added: “This time of year is tough for all carers, particularly young ones – let’s put them in the spotlight.”
Who else is in the running for the top spot?
Rivals for this year’s Christmas chart topping single include new releases from Ed Sheeran, Tom Grennan, Kelly Clarkson and Michael Bublé. Sir Bob Geldof has also been promoting Band Aid’s special 40th anniversary remix of Do They Know It’s Christmas.
Martin Talbot, CEO of the Official Charts, said: “This year we have a range of old and new favourites preparing to enter the race. With just four weeks to go until the big reveal, the field looks as wide as open as ever.”
However, it is harder than it used to be for new releases to make it to the top spot.
The Christmas number one used to be awarded to whoever sold the most copies, yet now, the combination of streams, YouTube views and downloads that come into play mean old hits tend to resurface in the charts.
Last year, Wham! claimed the top spot for the first time with Last Christmas, 39 years after it was released.
This year also marks 30 years since the release of Mariah Carey’s single All I Want For Christmas Is You, which has yet to claim the title of Christmas number one.
Love is Enough, by Bath Philarmonia’s Young Carers’ Choir (featuring Sir Ed Davey) is now available across streaming platforms.
The winner of the Christmas number one will be announced on Friday 20 December, live on BBC Radio 1.
