Australians seal Chelsea Women’s 2-0 victory over London City Lionesses

CHELSEA, 1 NOV — Sam Kerr’s goal in the 94th minute furthered Chelsea’s Women’s Super League streak to 32 games without a loss following a 2-0 victory over league newcomers London City Lionesses at Stamford Bridge this Saturday.

Kerr, who was subbed on in the 74th minute, immediately shifted the game and caught Elena Lete off guard with an open goal deep into added time to seal the win for the Blues, the Australian’s first goal at Stamford Bridge since 2023.

“It’s always nice to come out and play in front of the Chelsea fans of course, especially at the Bridge,” said Kerr. “I’m just happy to be back and playing, and enjoying my football.”

Australian international Ellie Carpenter kickstarted the action in the sixth minute when the right back scored her first goal for the Blues following a cross from Sandy Baltimore.

The July signing from OL Lyonnes was reunited with her former club coach Sonia Bompastor this season and solidified her status as a Blue today after six appearances.

“[I] could not be prouder to score my first goal and also help the team to secure the three points,” said Carpenter.

Despite the score at the final whistle, Chelsea appeared to have gaps in their formation throughout the entirety of the game, holding only 56.7% possession against the sixth ranked London City Lionesses.

“I think the energy from our side was not where we wanted it to be,” said Bompastor. “They [London City] showed a lot of confidence coming here and began the game making it challenging for us.”

London City Lionesses put up a strong fight in their first WSL match against the Blues. Although it was a loss, head coach Jocelyn Prêcheur saw many shining moments throughout his new squad’s performance.

“So a lot of positive things, we have started to see a team,” said Prêcheur. “Which was one of my biggest challenges at the beginning of the season, to create cohesion in the team. These are all new players, and on that point I am satisfied.”

After a challenging game Chelsea remain on top of the league table and have begun preparing for their match against London rivals Arsenal on 8 November at the Emirates.
