Surbiton care home for veterans appeals for toiletry donations amid coronavirus outbreak

A care home for veterans in Surbiton has made an appeal for donations of toiletries following shortages caused by the coronavirus outbreak.

The care home experienced a shortage of essential toiletries for its residents after it stopped all visits from friends and family as part of its COVID-19 social distancing procedures.

Home manager Helena Maher said: “Personal care is hugely important to our residents, supporting their well-being and dignity.

“So whether it’s an individual donation from a family, or a bulk donation from a hotel, whatever we receive will make a real difference to the veterans in our care.”

The 63-room home on Upper Brighton Road and Langley Avenue is run by Royal Star and Garter, a charity providing care for veterans and their partners living with a disability or dementia.

The charity is asking individuals and local hotels to donate products including deodorant, shampoo, and toothpaste for its residents.

A spokesperson for the charity said: “Residents, who would either go to the shops with their carers or receive goods from family and friends, have been unable to get new toiletries.

“The charity has been able to purchase some locally, but this is limited because of restrictions brought in by shops to tackle stockpiling.”

The charity is seeking the following new and unused items:

  • Body Spray (male and female)
  • Deodorant (male and female)
  • Dental fixtures
  • Shampoo (male and female)
  • Shower gel (male and female)
  • Liquid soap
  • Toothpaste
  • Conditioner
  • Hairspray
  • Lip balm
  • Steradent dental cleaner

There is a designated drop-off point for donations at the front of the home and products should be placed in clearly marked polythene bags.

The charity is urging the public to drop off donations as part of their daily exercise routine and maintain all necessary precautions and social distancing procedures.
