Jane Horrocks cut a birthday cake for the Samaritans’ Kingston branch to celebrate their 60th birthday.
Barry Fisher, 42, director of the Kingston branch, explained that people can contact the Samaritans about anything that is troubling them, from anxiety to suicidal thoughts.
According to Joe Bailey, 67, who has been volunteering for the Kingston Samaritans since June this year, people sometimes just need to talk. He said: “Talking is basic.”
The Kingston branch had 43,000 phone calls, emails, texts or face to face contacts last year. Currently about 170 people are volunteering for the Kingston Samaritans.
Jane Horrocks, known for her role as Bubble in Absolutely Fabulous, supports the Samaritans because “it is a great cause”. She added: “Often it is just an ear, isn’t it?”
