Banquet Records named Kingston Business of the Year

Independent retailer Banquet Records was named Business of the Year at the Kingston Business Excellence Awards 2017 on Thursday 12 October.

The Eden Street store picked up the prize at a glittering, black-tie gala dinner held at the Ravens Ait venue on the River Thames.

Jon Tolley, from Banquet Records, said: “It’s important that our wonderful music scene and Banquet’s place in it has been recognised.”

He added: “The challenge now is to get authorities to commit to protecting our music culture. And we’ll keep fighting that battle.”

The store, which puts on 200 music events a year in and around Kingston, also collected the award for Best Business for Marketing and Social Media.

The fifth annual ceremony celebrated the successes and achievements of the Royal Borough’s 8,000 businesses and over 250 people attended the evening to see the category winners announced.

Mental health and well-being publication Mental Movement Magazine won the Commitment to the Community award and was “highly commended” in Business of the Year category.

Co-founder Emma Michelle said: “We are absolutely overwhelmed to have been recognised for the work we are doing in the borough to support people struggling with mental health problems.

“We accept both awards in the name of our friend Grace Dear who sadly lost her battle with mental illness earlier this year.”

The awards, organised in partnership with Kingston Council, Kingston Chamber of Commerce and Kingston First, are open to all types of companies from start ups to large corporates.

Kirsten Henly, Chief Executive Officer of Kingston First, said: “It was a brilliant evening and a fantastic celebration of the businesses in Kingston and their drive for excellence.”
