Kingston Council has vowed to fight against the government’s approval of expansion at Heathrow Airport, which the council leader has branded a “terrible decision”.
The decision to approve the construction of a third runway at Heathrow came following a cabinet meeting on Tuesday and Kevin Davis, leader of Kingston Council, has voiced his dismay.
In a post on the Surbiton Neighbourhood Facebook page he said: “Terrible decision. There is likelihood of new flightpaths over New Malden.”
He added: “There is also the problem of a 40% increase in airport bound traffic and an almost certain increase in Council Tax in London to pay for it.”
Kingston Council announced its position against expansion at Heathrow and for expansion at Gatwick in a letter to Theresa May in August, which was also signed by the leaders of 10 other London councils.
This stance was echoed on Tuesday in a statement Davis made on the Kingston Council website. He said: “We will continue to make the case against the expansion of Heathrow in whatever way we can and will be discussing with Gatwick how we can support the inevitable legal case that will follow.”
