WATCH: Charity hands out free food every Friday at Kingston Environment Centre

‘Community Fridge’ has become a lifeline for vulnerable Kingston residents

Residents in Kingston are turning to a free food scheme at Kingston Environment Centre, where surplus food is made available to anyone who needs it.

The project, known as a community fridge, is stocked by food that would otherwise go to landfill from supermarkets, helping to reduce waste while supporting those facing rising living costs.

Organiser Maggie Pound said people rely on the service regularly and users tend to be on the breadline and would go hungry if the community fridge had to close.

Across the UK, more than 2.6 million emergency food parcels were distributed in 2025, according to the Trussell Trust
