On November 1, the Indian community celebrated Diwali by Kingston Bridge.
Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, symbolises the victory of light over darkness and truth over evil.
Members of the Hindu and Sikh communities gathered to mark the occasion, distributing traditional Indian sweets and letters.
In the evening, the display lit up the riverside, adding to the festive spirit.
Diwali, celebrated by millions of people around the world, honours the return of Lord Rama to his kingdom after 14 years in exile and his victory over the demon king Ravana. The lights are symbols of hope, resilience, and peace.
Himanshu Pandey, a student from Cardiff University, attended the event. He said: “Diwali represents the triumph of truth over evil, and it sends a message to the world to live in peace.” He connected this message to the current conflicts in places like Gaza and Ukraine, saying it reminds people of the importance of harmony.
Abhishek Kumar, a student from Luton University, also joined the celebration. He said he was happy to celebrate Diwali in London, a city known for its diversity. “It’s wonderful to be here with both Indian and international friends,” he added, appreciating the inclusive spirit of the city.
