MP for Kingston and Surbiton Ed Davey has claimed the Glasgow Climate Pact “leaves the world teetering on the brink of climate catastrophe” following the Cop26 climate conference.
The pact included promises to phase down, rather than phase out, the use of coal after the Chinese and Indian delegations objected to the previous wording in the draft agreement.
Davey said: “The COP26 deal represents a huge diplomatic failure for the Prime Minister, exposes an alarming refusal to act by China and Russia and leaves the world teetering on the brink of climate catastrophe unless world leaders revisit this deal urgently.”
Davey, who served as secretary of state for energy and climate change from 2012-2015, attended the conference and previously shared his concern over China’s lack of engagement with the talks.
Elsewhere, Kingston and Surbiton Green Party reacted to the conference by tweeting: “Phase down is insufficient, coal needs to be phased out quickly, fossil fuels have no place in the climate emergency. We are disappointed to say the least about the agreement.”
The Glasgow Climate Pact brought COP26 to an end following two weeks of talks between the 200 nations in attendance.
