There’s a new flick in town. Emma Stone, Dita Von Teese and Lana Del Rey are all fans of the 50s sex-siren eye flick. It oozes sophistication, glamour and sexiness. Suitable for every occasion, this look will take you from day to nightwear with ease.
The 1950s were all about creating a softer, more feminine look. Back in those days, women wore softly curled hair, gorgeous lipstick, defined eyebrows, and rosy cheeks. The general rule for make-up is to go big or go home on the eyes OR the lips, never both.
Ladies, this it’s time to break the rules! The 50s was the sexiest genre of all time. If you can nail it, you can nail a lot!
Start this look by applying foundation and concealer, blending the lines well. This will create a blank canvas for the rest of the look. To minimize shine, apply powder for a matte finish.
Comb your eyebrows and define them with an eyebrow pencil that is one shade darker than your natural colour. Make sure to fill in the lines and define the arches in your brows.
For razor-sharp cheekbones, sweep a rose blusher on the apples of the cheeks. Blend well to avoid a clown look.
Use a lip liner to create an outline for your lipstick, defining the arch in the upper lip. Apply a matching lipstick (preferably in a matte red, coral, or pinkish-red) to top off the look.
Make the brow bone stand out with a light, natural colour, like cream or a light shimmering gold. This will also make the arch of the eyes look bigger. Open up the eyes by only putting eyeliner on the top lash line.
The best way to get this look is by applying a soft kohl liner as close to the lash line as possible. Don’t be afraid to pull the eyelid to the side so you can draw right on the roots. To make the line smooth and defined, put liquid eyeliner over the kohl. This line should be solid and dark, starting from the inside corner of the eye. Do a subtle flick at the end of the lid, dragging the lash line out a bit for a seriously seductive look. This will extend the look of your lashes a la Jessica Rabbit.
Curl your eyelashes and apply a few coats of mascara in a zig-zag motion. Putting mascara on the bottom lashes creates a doe-eyed look, but don’t put liner on the bottom lid as well. Steer clear of over-working the eyes with this look. Wearing rouge or very pink lipstick means you must tone down the eyes if you don’t want to look like a cabaret act.
