Stephen Fry lends his support to Library campaigners

British actor, Stephen Fry has tweeted about his support of the Surrey Library Action Movement (SLAM) to help save Surrey’s libraries. <--break->“>Fry backed the campaign and encouraged his followers to donate to the cause, despite being busy filming upcoming blockbuster, The Hobbit, in New Zealand.</p> <p>Shortly after 9am on Friday morning, Fry tweeted: “Do help @surrey_SLAM fight the good fight for libraries and librarians. Give the price of a book: a fine cause.”</p> <p>The power of twitter has meant that Fry’s message has been re-tweeted all over the country via his 3,917,110 followers.</p> <p>SLAM excitedly responded: “Thank you so much for the mention @stephenfry. We are greatly in your debt. We’ll have those libraries on a safe footing, just you see!”</p> <p>The tweet came after SLAM contacted Mr Fry to gain his support but were told he was busy filming, yet Fry managed to alert his followers to the cause just 12 hours later.</p> <p>The campaigners hope this high profile move will rally support and help them raise the much-needed £18,000 to help pay legal costs.</p> <p>The surprise tweet came at the right time as SLAM prepare for a judicial review, to be held at the High Court next week.</p> <p>SLAM said: “This is, of course, wonderful news for us and would ask that you follow Stephen’s sage advice in donating, if you can.”</p> <p>The action group have successfully challenged Surrey County Council’s plans to implement volunteer-led libraries, claiming the council did not “adequately assess” the impacts on local communities.</p> <p>Stephen Fry is not the only celebrity to come out in support for Surrey libraries, local residents, Brian Blessed and Sue Perkins, have also voiced support.</p> <!-- MOLONGUI AUTHORSHIP PLUGIN 4.7.10 --> <!-- https://www.molongui.com/authorship/ --> <div class=
