Kingston Council received £5.3 million for local schools

Kingston Council will receive £5.3m of the extra schools funding to expand primary schools

The money comes from an extra £500m that the government has provided nationally to expand school capacity because of the rise in the population.

The Royal Borough of Kingston was one of the selected Councils to receive funding for local schools.

There has been an increase of 30 per cent in the birth rate in Kingston which adds up to 240 more children. Kingston Council put in 8.5 extra forms of entry in a permanent expansion programme for local schools from September 2011, spending over £46m.

Councillor Liz Green, Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Education for All, said, “This extra money is excellent news as it will help us to reduce our borrowing on our existing expansion or look further at what additional expansion is still needed.”

Further expansion in primary schools and the parallel in secondary schools is yet to be fulfilled.

While Kingston is regarded as a small education borough, Councillor Green said, “this fund shows we can ‘punch above our weight’ when it comes to working with central Government”.
